WIN is a global forum for the professional independent music industry. It was launched in 2006 in response to business, creative and market access issues faced by the independent sector everywhere. For independent music companies and their national trade associations worldwide, WIN is a collective voice. It also acts as an advocate, instigator and facilitator for its continually growing membership. WIN is a collective in the sense that it is a focal point for collecting and sharing knowledge about the national differences and similarities of the music market sector in which its members operate. It can when required speak with a collective voice on behalf of its members on international issues. And it can and will at times act collectively in whatever way is deemed appropriate, including commercially – as in the case of setting up Merlin as a network for the selective licensing of independent music rights in new media businesses where the sector is best represented collectively. Together, the WIN membership represents a bigger market share than the biggest major music multinational (the value of the global independent music market being estimated as 29% of the whole). When and where there are business-to-business benefits locally from having a worldwide independent network, WIN will try to deliver them. When and where a local organisation is best placed to deal independently and directly with its national Government, industry sector and market, WIN will have no official view or involvement, other than to facilitate the sharing of information and advice between its members. |
