Songbroker launches push to export more New Zealand music copyrights
New Zealand independent music publisher Songbroker hasn’t been around for long but is already having an impact on the prospects and livelihoods of local songwriters and composers. Songbroker is unashamedly focused on finding income opportunities for Kiwi songwriters, mainly through placement of songs on films, TV shows, advertisements and online content. Songbroker artists regularly feature on local shows such as Shortland Street, Brokenwood Mysteries and Filthy Rich – and also on NZ films, documentaries and TV commercials.
Songbroker is now turning its attention to the other 99% of the potential music licensing market, with the launch of a web platform representing NZ music to international users.
“The Songbroker offering is quite unique. We represent the works of about 180 talented songwriters and composers, and unlike many of the world’s online music libraries, this is authentic art – it’s the real deal, it’s coming from a very creative nation, and that’s a key point of difference.” says founder Jan Hellriegel.
Hellriegel adds the export scope for Kiwi musicians is “huge”.
“You can only sell a kilo of milk powder or a bottle of wine once. However, a song can be licensed many, many times over its copyright lifetime. Music also costs nothing to ship, and crosses borders without attracting tariffs.”
Songbroker’s new platform launches at Seafarers in Auckland on Wednesday 22 March with guests including the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Hon. Jacqui Dean. More info at: www.songbroker.nz

Spotify Tops 50m Subscribers as Growth Rate Slows Down
Spotify has officially reached 50m paying customers – a jump of 10m from six months ago. It’s an impressive climb, and over double the latest equivalent figure from Apple Music – but actually represents a slowdown in subscriber growth percentage terms. In January 2015, Spotify announced it had 15m subscribers. Five months later, in June 2015, it had reached 20m subs. That was a 33.3% rise within a half-year. Spotify’s next big official subscriber announcement came in March 2016, when we learned the platform had 30m paying subs. That was up 50% on the 20m announced nine months before.
Another six months later, in September last year, Spotify announced that it had topped 40m subscribers – once again up 33.3%, or 10m, on the 30m figure. On March 2nd, Spotify confirmed that its platform has now surpassed 50m subscribers. It’s a big moment in the company’s history – but means that in the six months between September’s 40m milestone and the new 50m figure, Spotify posted a 25%subscriber increase. Then again, if (by adding 10m subscribers every six months) Spotify’s growth has now hit terminal velocity, it still points to a bright 2017 for the streaming platform – and suggests its subscriber base could reach somewhere near 70m by the end of this year.
Major music rights-holders remain out of long-term contracts with Daniel Ek’s company, with no conclusions to fresh licensing negotiations so far. Since Spotify’s long-term deals with the major labels expired, the likes of Pandora, iHeartRadio, Amazon and SoundCloud have signed multi-price licensing agreements with the music companies. As reported earlier, Spotify is now waving goodbye to key executives Francis Keeling and Petra Hansson. These execs follow the likes of Chief Revenue Officer Jeff Levick, content chief Ken Parks, EMEA sales boss Jonathan Forster and label relations head Steve Savoca out of Spotify. Savoca recently joined Apple Music to head up its New York office in a label relations role.
Estimates suggest that, if Spotify’s valuation of $8bn is accurate, Daniel Ek owns a stake worth $825m. – Source: Music Business Worldwide

New IMNZ Member Ruckus Garvey Will ‘Tease Ya’ With New Single
With singles ‘Season’ and ‘Chip on My Shoulder’ already under his belt, Ruckus Garvey is planning to turn heads with the Misfits of Science-inspired new single, Tease Ya. Written and self-produced by Ruckus himself, Tease Ya draws inspiration from his heady Misfits of Science days as well as the image-obsessed world of social media. He has once again called upon the expertise of Grammy nominated engineer Beau Vallis to deliver yet another standout mix of the track. Previous single Chip on My Shoulder received regular spins on Flava and Mai FM, Edge TV, MTV NZ & Australia and the Air NZ inflight programme.
‘Tease Ya’ features on the forthcoming EP ‘Soundtrack to a Revolution’, scheduled for release in June.

Li’l Chuck the One Man Skiffle Machine returns with Utility Blues
Utility Blues is Li’l Chuck‘s follow up to the highly acclaimed 2013 release Blues In Full Swing.
Having spent a lifetime rummaging through the drawers of 1930’s – 50’s music, Chuck’s mostly original songs are inspired by the sounds of the era – Blues, Early Jazz, Western Swing, Ragtime etc. and are uniquely presented in the style of street performers from those glory days.
Sticking to the traditional one man band format, Chuck plays and records all the instruments simultaneously, no overdubs or edits. Just, Chuck, his skiffle machine and a bunch of mics.
“I have nothing to hide behind other than my drum and my guitar,” says Chuck. “I recorded all songs live in the studio and aimed to capture the best performance I could.”
In an age where we are rushing around at breakneck speed, where everything is instant, sugar coated, airbrushed and overly polished, Li’l Chuck brings us down to earth with some organic, all natural, whole grain, naked goodness.
Utility Blues is available for purchase digitally from iTunes, Amazon, Bandcamp and all good digital providers. CDs are purchasable at live shows.
Li’l Chuck the One Man Skiffle Machine upcoming shows:
Album release show: Sat 18th March – Wunderbar, Lyttelton
Album release show: Sat 8th April – Wine Cellar, Auckland |

ON THE LIVE FRONT
Mel Parsons Announces Tour With Full Band
Mel Parsons has spent the last few years dividing her time between touring the world and performing her solo show in some of New Zealand’s remotest woolsheds. But this May, the Kiwi favourite will embark on her first tour with a full band since 2015, taking in the country’s main centres.
Parsons will play San Fran in Wellington on May 4, Galatos in Auckland on May 5 and Blue Smoke in Christchurch on May 6.
The award-winning singer-songwriter is looking forward to returning to stages at these iconic venues, with the backing of a full band: “Taking my band out on the road is a special treat for me after touring solo for so long. I’m really excited about bringing the full sound back to these songs.”
Inspired by touring almost every inch of rural New Zealand with comedy duo The Bitches’ Box, Parsons will have special guests from the comedy world at each show, including country crooner Wilson Dixon direct from the USA; fringe festival favourite and political satirist James Nokise; and good kiwi bloke Keith ‘The Numbers’ Preene of Golden Goose fame.
Don’t miss your chance to see Mel Parsons live with her full band. She will be playing songs from DRYLANDS, as well as all the favourites from her back catalogue.
Tickets are on sale at eventfinda.co.nz from 9am Thursday March 16.

New IMNZ member Andrew Keoghan Announces New Zealand Tour and Shares New Single
Our favourite Los Angeles-based new romantic, Andrew Keoghan returns to New Zealand for three shows in the homeland. Accompanied by his band, Keoghan announces these dates alongside the release of his new single, ‘Something Going On’ off his critically acclaimed second album Every Orchid Offering.
Easily a standout track with its haunting refrain, Keoghan’s latest single is a wry narrative about a long distance relationship, supported by Cure-esk guitar, impeccable bass playing and soft beds of vocal harmonies. It’s as if Paul McCartney and Bryan Ferry each took a break from McCartney II and Flesh and Blood in 1980, to conjure this into existence.Listen to ‘Something Going On’ Soundcloud / SpotifyAndrew Keoghan – Something Going On Tour:
