TAITE MUSIC PRIZE 2017
In search of the year’s finest New Zealand album
#taitemusicprize
Independent Music NZ is proud to announce that nominations are now open for the Taite Music Prize 2017.
Named after the late Dylan Taite, one of the country’s most highly respected music journalists, this will be the eighth year for the award. The Taite Music Prize’s purpose is to recognise outstanding creativity for an entire collection of music contained on one album. The winner will receive a cash prize of $10,000, to be spent as they wish – with thanks to Founding Partner of the Taite Music Prize, Recorded Music NZ. Additionally through the support of Red Bull Studios Auckland, the winner receives recording time at the Auckland studios, alongside a year’s supply of Red Bull product.Acknowledging originality, creativity and musicianship regardless of sales figures or genre, the Taite Music Prize was established to champion the finest release by a New Zealand artist or group – the previous winners have all been excellent albums that demonstrate these criteria well.
The overall winner will be announced at a presentation in a lavish new hosting venue on Tuesday 18th April 2017. Alongside the main prize, there are two additional awards to be given out at the ceremony in 2017: the already established Independent Music NZ Classic Record and a newly-created award that celebrates the freshest talent of Aotearoa. We’ll have more details for you about the new award and entry details when everyone is back from the beach – more news on that very soon!
Shout-outs to our wonderful partners in the Taite Music Prize:
Recorded Music NZ, NZ On Air,
NZ Music Commission, APRA AMCOS, Red Bull Studios Auckland,

| From Ziggy, the lovely chap who is responsible for venue bookings and managing the San Fran venue in Wellington, comes this update for the summer:
UPGRADES @ San Fran
Recently San Fran has made significant improvements to the sound system and other equipment available for touring acts. Since upgrading all our amplification at the end of last year with 25,000 watts of power we have now doubled our sub-woofers by adding 4 2×18″ EV MT2 cabinets giving us a much needed boost of low end in the system.
It gives us super loud smooth bass all the way down without losing any of the familiar punch associated from this classic Sub enclosure design.
We have also upgraded the in house microphone kit with 7 new instrument mics and have continued to replace and add to our stand and XLR collection now totalling 20 top quality K&M Stands and plenty of cables for stage use.
How much easier it is for everyone to be able to walk into a venue that always does the basics right.
NEW VENUE FOR WELLINGTON
TheHunterLounge.co.nz
For a long time Wellington has lacked a decent 1000 capacity venue, a venue that is truly price competitive and wont lack anything in quality in comparison to other Wellington venues of this size.
The Hunter Lounge will be up and running in 2017 remodelled in a style that will serve its performers and patrons a quality event. Its location on campus at Wellington’s Vic Uni means there is a large current student market to tap into for sales and a venue with a lot of history going back to its hey day as Wellingtons prime spot ‘ The Union Hall’.
Ziggy will be involved with bookings of The Hunter Lounge and he is easily contactable via the details at www.SanFran.co.nz or the Hunter details above. |

The Bats return with album number nine, The Deep Set and have just premiered their second single ‘No Trace’ on Brooklyn Vegan today. The jangle is strong in this one with Robert Scott (guitar/vocals) continuing his mastery of the personal and pastoral. Scott wrote the song at home in Roseneath, near Port Chalmers. “It’s pretty much a love song,” he says. “I’m so close to it, but I do like it and hope that others pick up on the vibe and feel of it, I like the way it zooms along.”
No Trace is the second single (check out the first – Antlers here) to be released from the new album which is out through Flying Nun on January 27 next year on LP, CD and digitally.

DateMonthYear releases new video only single Numbers
Hamilton band DateMonthYear is releasing a new single full of hard hitting lyrics that reflect on today’s society and how people’s lives revolve around numbers.
DMY Founder Trevor Faville said the new song, called Numbers, wasn’t created to be a happy song to distract people from what is going on in the world. Instead, DMY wanted a song that addresses problems in society and the world, as well as things people see on television, social media or when they walk out the door. It is about providing a voice for the issues rather than a distraction.Faville and fellow band members’ Emma Koretz, Brooke Baker, Hayely Schwass and Tyler Leet’s inspiration and the idea behind the song is that for a lot of people, numbers define everything – the numbers of your mortgage or rent, income, supermarket shopping and simply hoping that you have enough to pay for groceries and bills.
The melodious song sings about how people go through life hoping that the numbers fall their way. Watch the video below, or via the link.
